Custom artwork on surfboard fins by Paul Carter 8-19 #paulcarterart

When I started surfing at age  5 it was the beginning of an adventure with the sea and the many waves of change of growth and exploration and facing my fears and staying focused on my dreams and positive goals.

The first fin I painted was put on the second classic 3 stringer I hand shaped was around 94-95.
It was glassed on the board directly with no box.  It was a 3 stringer at the time from Clark foam, all redwood stringers.   It was and still is a beautiful board with a classic antique Hawaiian painting on the fin.

When I started painting in 2000 I was inspired to do so and I went for it and been at it ever since.   My journey began with the process of learning by doing.

The first fin below is two sided using a paint pen and 100% freehand.
I have traveled to beautiful place with amazing waves and tropical and forest landscapes, this a surf dream from parts of my travels and a Surfers dream perspective with a right & left point break.

The abstract fin below is a great way to let go of trying to be perfect and to free oneself of the conditioning by learning by doing.   These fins look amazing in the sunlight and the colors and design go with the custom Surfboards that I hand shape.

Custom Surfboards By Paul Carter

The Surfboards below are 9ft on the left and 9’2 on the right.

The abstract board I rode for a couple months and it is an all around board for performance or cruising with some nice speed spots in the top half.   It has a nice curve in the tail for laying into tight turns when one is ready and willing.

My friend Rob is now the owner of that board which weighs in around 13.5 lbs.

The blue tint board on the right is a nice combination of classic surfing and cruising with a solid stable rocker for nose riding and nice smooth turns.  That board weighs in around 15.5-16lbs.

That board was custom and hand shaped for Carolyn daughter of Rob and also the WSA west coast longboard champion.

This board is an 8’8 custom made for Chris to ride in chest high to overhead surf.
This board has a few speed spots and fun options.   The standard 3.50 sides with a 7” center is a great all around fin set up.

This is a 7’6 round pin tail with the future fins and is great with medium to large fins even the T-1 twin fins with the small center fin is great for waist to head high.
This was made custom for Steve and the paddle and carving options.

Handmade custom Surfboards & Art by Paul Carter

Two custom Hand Shaped Surfboards.

The board on the left is a custom blank made by Clark Foam in 2006.  It is designed with three redwood stringers.  The center stringer is 1/4 inch and the two sides are 1/8 thick for the curves of the waves

I am putting together a short YouTube video for my channel, link is below.  The video will show more of the details of the painted board with more close up shots of the stringers and the colors of the painted waves.

The painted board is just under 9’6 by one inch with a 18 inch nose and 22.50 center and a 14.50 tail.

I rode the board is the annual Sano Surf Club contest which was a great time and I managed to get some good waves and a first place wooden trophy.

At the time I wanted to create a clsssic performance style board and a one of kind painting for the art shows and of course surfing and to have fun cruising and nose riding.

The board on the right was a remake from a well used board in the early 2000.

In the early 1990s I saw a Rene Yater board with the same stringer set up and it made logical sense on a few levels.  It only took one board to realize the importants I’d having the stringers wide enough for the coenteenbox to fitnin cleanly.  I handshaped a few hundred of these double wedge stringer boards in all sizes.

It was time to let this board go to a stoked human and I am happy to say it did.
